A young orphan from Kansas, Dorothy Gale, was unhappy with her lusterless existence on the farm that her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry owned. Dorothy yearned for a new life "Over the Rainbow", particularly when mean neighbor Ms. Gulch vowed to put Toto, her beloved dog to sleep. As Dorothy planed to run away with Toto, a tornado whisked them to the colorful and magical land of Oz. Dorothy's house fell and killed the Wicked Witch of the East, ruler of Muchkinland; Dorothy freed the Munchkins by accident. The Wicked Witch of the West, Witch East's sister, went after Dorothy to avenge her sister. The Good Witch of the North, Glinda, came to Dorothy's rescue by giving her Ruby Slippers and advised her to "Follow the Yellow Brick Road". Dorothy needed to locate the Emerald City and seek help from the powerful Wizard of Oz who might help her return to Kansas. As this journey embarked, Dorothy and her new friends Scarecrow (who needed a Brain), Tin Man (who desired a Heart), and Lion (who was desperate for Courage) battled with the menacing Wicked Witch. Victory was finally attained as the four engaged the Brain, Heart, and Courage they had all along but did not believe they possessed. With Friendship and Family guiding her home, Dorothy professed "There is No Place Like Home" and the miraculous journey came to a happy end.

在一個堪薩斯州農場中跟隨Aunt Em和Uncle Henry生活的Dorothy，是一個不甘於平凡的孤兒，她以幻想彩虹彼端的情景來逃避生活的乏味。當刻薄的鄰居Gulch小姐威脅要人道毀滅Dorothy的愛犬Toto時，Dorothy和Toto决定離家出走。突然間一個龍捲風吹襲，Dorothy和Toto被吹到多姿多彩的奇幻世界---奧茲城。
Dorothy的房子在龍捲風中從天而降，擊斃了東方壞女巫，被壞女巫制肘的曼奇國民重獲自由。東方壞女巫的姐姐西方壞女巫前來報復。北方好女巫Glinda為保護Dorothy，替Dorothy穿上了東方壞女巫的魔法紅寶石鞋及教她沿著黃磚路走，起程到翡翠城中請求法力無邊的奧茲巫師協助，尋找返回堪薩斯家之路。
在這個奇妙之旅中，Dorothy和三位新朋友，包括稻草人、鐵人和獅子利用他們潛在的機智、善良及勇氣，消滅了惡毒的西方壞女巫。各人領悟到相信自己的重要、友情及親情的價值，而世上最美好的地方就是「家」，自我啟發的旅程完滿結束。
